Reclaim the Night

Chester Reclaim the Night march & Vigil 2022 will take place on Thursday 10th November, during North West Sexual Violence Awareness Week 2022. Banner/placard making will be happening at the Storyhouse from 5pm, followed by the Reclaim the Night march, from the Town Hall Square at 7:30pm.  A loop down St. Werburg and up Northgate Street, will then finish with a quiet vigil at The Cross in Watergate Street.

The first Reclaim the Night march in the UK was in 1977 in Leeds. Inspired by similar marches in West Germany, the Leeds march was partly in response to the ‘Yorkshire Ripper’ murders and the police reaction, which was to tell women they should not go out at night unless absolutely necessary.

Vigil, Chester City Centre, as part of NW Sexual Violence awareness week 2021

These early Reclaim the Night marches fought for a woman’s right to walk without fear at night. They made it clear that women should not be restricted or blamed because of male violence.

Join us to Reclaim the Night & Vigil walking and standing together in solidarity and reflection knowing that women have the right to be out at night without fear or harassment.
