Not Alone is a short, 2D animation film developed by Larissa Prado Mastria in conjunction with Chester Sexual Abuse Support Service. The aim of the film is to empower survivors to realise that they are not alone, to seek support should they wish to.
It was a Rape Crisis training day again the other Saturday, and some great work and thoughts shared by our CSASS team. Here’s a fab insight written by one of our team about working at CSASS: we listen very carefully to what is said, what is unsaid, what metaphors people use. We notice what we […]
An amazing, inspiring evening last week when we invited members of the public to help create a temporary public art installation outside Chester Cathedral. Survivors of sexual violence had donated materials which we all then used to create a hand. As Larissa, the volunteer who conceived this project, stated ‘the future is in our hands’. […]
On a very hot evening a week or so ago, some of our volunteers, staff and trustees enjoyed a summer thank you event, very kindly hosted by Chester Art Centre, who were incredibly welcoming and plied us with amazing watermelon mocktails. We chatted and laughed and tried our hands at bongo drumming too. And now it’s […]
Our multi-sensory work with clay continues. And our facilitator has made a short film showing our hands working on the clay. Initially we were working with our eyes closed, allowing us a very strong focus, a heightened awareness of the music we were listening to, plus the squelch and feel of the clay. We now work […]
Today, CSASS attended a meeting about the Truth Project, which has recently started work. It was great to see at first hand the care with which they’ve ensured that anyone who visits them to share their experiences will be welcomed with sensitivity and empathy. If you’d like to find out more about the Truth Project, […]
Last week in the blazing sun we had a thank you picnic with our work-based learning placement student as she came to the end of her five week stint with us. Luckily it’s not goodbye, as she’s already a volunteer with us, but it’s been fab to have her working for us for 30 hours/week. […]
Over the past month, 13 of us at CSASS have participated in Rape Crisis training modules, one of which involved learning more around the objectification of women. One of the participants noted that ‘training that is ongoing helps to re-affirm our own clarity as helpers so that we are free from confusion ourselves – this […]
Click on the link below to read our latest newsletter. May’s speeding by quickly, and CSASS is, as ever, busy. We’re very lucky to have a student on placement from Chester University working in the office with us over the next five weeks, and she’s bringing fresh perspectives. Today we’re looking forward to our counsellors’ […]
CSASS is developing ways of working together creatively to aid recovery. On Saturday, Emily from Survivors’ Knitwork travelled from Brighton to join our creativity and campaigning group. Together, we made great progress on our squares as we felt empowered to have pressure-free conversations. Fabia Bates, Director of Survivors’ Network, and one of the founders of Survivors’ […]
On a Saturday in March, we held our first creativity and campaigning group, with the focus on Survivors’ Knitwork. Survivors’ Knitwork is working nationally on a giant shared scarf project, to highlight sexual violence and to support survivors. So across the country individuals have been making 20 x 20 cm purple squares (knitting isn’t obligatory, but […]
We’re challenging Chester again, with more men in short skirts raising awareness on the day Chester celebrates International Women’s Day.
‘It’s good to be on the way, It’s good to try to get somewhere, It’s good to be a woman.’ These are the last lines of a poem by Choman Hardi, a refugee from Kurdistan, Iraq. We used these words as an uplifting starting point as we learnt about the many barriers faced by asylum seeking and refugee […]

After six months in our new premises, it was about time we celebrated. So with purple and gold tablecloths, platters of food generously donated by Marks and Spencer (via a gift voucher), and lots of cheery energy we had a great lunch time event today, open to all our supporters and stakeholders. Information boards highlighted our […]
This evening CSASS went into Chester to start more conversations, to question assumptions around victim blaming, as part of our new campaign. The ‘men in short skirts’ campaign has been carried out in countries from Turkey to Argentina, and tonight we launched it in Chester. Being Chester,
We’ve just had a fascinating, informative and empowering time at the Rape Crisis England and Wales national conference, an annual event. At CSASS, we benefit hugely from being part of the Rape Crisis national network, sharing best practice, ideas and guidelines. CSASS has just been through the Rape Crisis external review process, and has been accredited once more […]
At CSASS we’ve been exploring using creativity as a tool to raise awareness and to aid conversations which otherwise wouldn’t happen. The theme of our most recent series of events has been ‘Silence isn’t always Golden’, so we’ve made golden and slogan-embossed umbrellas, taken them to Chester Business Club walk, to Chester Pride, we’ve handed […]
